A Local Coffee Café with a Big Mission
Beans‑and‑Bites, founded in August 2022 by Kris Sayers and Brittany Cochran, is more than just a coffee shop. It’s a nonprofit café and a safe, inclusive space dedicated to providing meaningful workforce opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In Grundy County alone, the unemployment rate for individuals with disabilities is nearly 80%. Beans‑and‑Bites is working to change that—one job, one smile, and one latte at a time.
Currently, the café operates as a mobile pop-up at local events and private gatherings, serving coffee, pastries, and light meals. But even bigger things are brewing! Their Phase II development—a brick-and-mortar, drive-thru café and bakery—is under construction at 1295 E Division St. in Diamond, Illinois. This new location will allow Beans‑and‑Bites to expand its services and impact, offering more training opportunities and a welcoming space for all.
More Than Coffee: A Place to Belong
Every sip and every bite served by Beans‑and‑Bites helps fund a larger purpose: empowerment, inclusion, and community growth. Their model creates a safe and social environment where employees can learn, grow, and thrive—while also helping to raise awareness about disability employment challenges in our area.
They are fueled by the generosity of the community through donations, volunteer efforts, and even a matching grant campaign currently in progress. It's a true example of how local support can drive real, lasting change.
